Senior leadership

Read this article by David Ignatius:  20 Months in Baghdad.  A good example of senior leadership for the 21st Century –but really the qualities of senior leadership in all of history.  Patraeus understands, like Eisenhower, Marshall, Pershing, Grant and Washington, that senior military leadership is much more about war than it is about battles.   Much more about attitude and demeanor than training (not that battles and training can be ignored).  I think if you look back at other senior leaders, not so recent, or American –Ceasar, Frederick, Napoleon.  They got it as well.  The question then becomes… how do you create leaders like this that “get it.”  Or, are we stuck with what appears to be the methodology consistant throughout history –they just show up?
